Police surrender to renegade commander in Herat

HERAT CITY (PAN): Three policemen surrendered to an anti-government commander in western Herat province however Taliban claim abducting a dozen of the law enforcers in an armed attack on a security check post here.

Ghulam Mahboob Afzalzada district chief of Guzra of this province told Pajhwok Afghan News three policemen of Neshin security check post turned to Ghulam Yahya Akbari a local antigovernment commander in this district.

Policemen had also submitted eight AK 47s to the local commander; however Akbari alleged five policemen with as many weapons surrendered to him.

Former local commander, Akbari who served as first mayor of the province in the Karzai administration was relieved of his official duty due to unknown reasons after he was appointed as Public Works department head in the province.

However Qari Yousuf Ahmadi spokesman of the Taliban regime claimed abducting dozen of the cops from Siawashan area of Guzra district. He added militants decamped with arms and torched the security check post after the assault.

Taliban high commission would decide over the fate of the captives, he added.

Dr Hamayon Aziz head of the provincial council blamed personal feud and dispute as cause for bloodshed and killing of 40 people including elders and Hazrat Hazrati former district chief of Guzra.
