Two men sentenced to 15 years in jail for kidnapping

KABUL): A primary court sentenced two men to 15 years in jail in connection with a child kidnapping case in southwestern Nimroz province, an official said on Thursday.

Bashir and Janan, native to northern Baghlan province, had abducted the child on March 27. They were arrested on the charges a day after the abduction, Mohammad Sarwar, the primary court chief of Nimroz, told Pajhwok Afghan News. He said that the convicts kept the child in a house in provincial capital, Zaranj. Each of them was sentenced to 15 years in jail, he said, adding they had the right to appeal against the verdict.

Janan, one of the convicts, said he would not agree with the court decision and would move an upper court.

The abducted child’s father, Mohammad Omar, welcomed the verdict and hoped it would prove a lesson for others.

Last month, Col. Musa Khan, deputy police chief of the province, quoted Janan as saying that he was working in a construction company in Iran.

An Afghan told him in Iran to abduct Mohammad Omar’s son in Afghanistan and bring him to the neighbouring country and he would be given a large amount of money, Khan had said.

After police got a hold of the incident, they started an operation that led to the arrest of the two and recovery of the child.
