KABUL): President Hamid Karzai and his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday agreed on further strengthening Kabul-Tehran relations.

At a meeting on sidelines of the 10th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, the two leaders conferred on issues of mutual interest.

The Presidential Palace in Kabul said the current situation in Afghanistan and developments in the region also figured at the meeting. They underlined the need for Afghan-Iran cooperation in different spheres.

In his address to the summit, Karzai stressed greater regional cooperation in areas of trade and politics, as well as coordination in the war on terror and drugs, his office said in a statement.

Set up in 2001, the SCO groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Afghanistan takes part in SCO summits as a guest member.
