The prestigious project initiated by Pajhwok Afghan News, the Killid Group, Saba Media Organization, the founding members of AIMC, was announced in a conference held at Serena Hotel in central Kabul city on Monday.
Danish Karokhel, director of Pajhwok Afghan News, in his address said the consortium was a platform for all media outlets who wished to serve people truly.
Purpose of establishing AIMC was to create an atmosphere for Afghan media and all sectors of civil society to work jointly on media programme, he said.
“Under the four years plan of the consortium, we shall adopt a new path of reporting, under which we shall be committed to our national interests,” Karokhel added.
Members include over 60 Radios, TV facilities in 11 provinces, an independent Afghan news agency, two main Afghan national weekly magazines, three web sites, daily analytical material, regular in-depth research and surveys, and regular monitoring of various sectors of society in the country.
Representatives from non-governmental organisations, think tanks, and research and survey agencies also participated in the conference.
According to an AIMC press release, the consortium was an informal association, to substantially increase the impact of Afghan media, in generating public debate and opinion making with the aim of contributing to build peace, end violence and avoid a new civil war in post 2014 Afghanistan.
The Consortium would perform its watchdog role from a constructive angle, focusing its coverage on television and radio drama productions, based on real issues of concern, for the present and immediate future of the people of Afghanistan, especially women and youth, added the statement.
Speaking at the same conference, Abdul Salam Rahimi, head of Saba media outlet said, the aim of AIMC was to create confidence among the masses about Afghan media.
“With the help of AIMC we can make truth based (on) investigative stories on corruption, women rights, violence against women the peace process and other issues,” he said.
Shahir Ahmad Zahin, head of The Killid Group said: “The problems for media people increased every other day and cooperation among media outlets can allow journalists to have access to information in all parts of the country.”
Under AIMC’s charter, it would emphasis on investigative reporting on economic related issues, such as agriculture, inter-regional relations.
Proper coverage would be given to issues vital for strengthening democracy and good governance, access to justice, human rights, anti corruption and non-violent solutions for family issues, community and ethnic conflicts.
