GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Nine heavily-armed militants were nabbed on Thursday during joint security operations conducted by Afghan and foreign forces in southern Ghazni province.
Gen Daud Shah Fadar, the 203rd Thunder Military Corps commander, said the operations were conducted in 18 districts – primarily to flush out Taliban fighters.
“Prior to the operation, insurgents were asked to give up the insurgency and join the peace process,” he said, adding that five cars, two motorcycles and 30 bombs were discovered from the militants.
The rebels were arrested in Khwaja Omari, Ajristan and Andar districts.
The intelligence department head, Syed Amir Shah, also present at the press conference, said they were ready to face resistance and warned militants would suffer major casualties.
“Most areas controlled by Taliban will be recaptured,” he said.
Worried over the offensive, Ghazni residents urged authorities to provide adequate protection for their families.
“The operation against insurgents is good idea, but the officials must be careful about lives of civilians,” said Dildar Khan, a resident of Deh Yak district.
