WASHINGTON (PAN, India and the United States on Tuesday met for the first time in New York as part of a newly-formed trilateral group created to collaborate in Afghanistan.
A senior Afghan official said the meeting at deputy foreign ministerial level at the Afghan mission to the United Nations marked further strengthening of cooperation between Afghanistan and its two key allies.
Deputy foreign minister Jawed Ludin led the Afghan delegation, the US team was represented by its Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Ambassador, Marc Grossman, and the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert O Blake; and the Indian delegation led by Joint Secretary (Pakistan/Afghanistan/Iran) YK Sinha and Joint Secretary (Americas) Jawed Ashraf.
“All sides welcomed the frank and comprehensive nature of the discussions and agreed the dialogue helps advance their shared values, interests and goals,” the Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations said in a statement.
The formation of the group was announced by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton following the India US Strategic Dialogue in Washington in June.
A separate trilateral group comprising Afghanistan, Pakistan and the US already exists. The group meets later this week at the deputy foreign ministerial level.
