Karzai, Obama to meet at White House on Friday

WASHINGTON (PAN): Visiting Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his US counterpart Barack Obama would meet at the White House on January 11, a presidential spokesman announced on Monday.

“Obama looks forward to welcoming the Afghan delegation to Washington and discussing our continued transition in Afghanistan, and our shared vision of an enduring partnership,” said White House Press Secretary Jay Carney ahead of the Afghan-US summit.

Leading a high-powered delegation, Karzai is scheduled to arrive in Washington on Tuesday evening (early Wednesday morning according to Afghan time). Following the meeting, the two leaders are expected to issue a joint statement.

Before having talks with Obama, Karzai will meet Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters that Clinton held meetings with her officials preparing for her talks with Karzai. Clinton, who returned to the State Department following her month-long illness, will host a working dinner for Karzai on Thursday before joining Obama at the White House on Friday.

Karzai is also scheduled to have a public appearance at the Georgetown University on Friday.
