UK, Pakistan renew support for peace drive

KABUL in promoting the Afghan-led reconciliation campaign, the two sides said on Tuesday.

The agreement came at overnight talks between British Prime Minister David Cameron and his Pakistani counterpart Raja Pervez Ashraf at 10 Downing Street.

“The meeting was an opportunity to consolidate what was discussed in the recent trilateral meeting that the Prime Minister hosted at Chequers with President Karzai of Afghanistan and President Zardari of Pakistan,” a spokesman for Cameron said.

Ashraf said Pakistan desired a peaceful and stable Afghanistan and was working closely with the High Peace Council to ensure that steps taken in this regard were beneficial.

He also called for strengthening Afghan security forces during the transition period to enable them to take up future responsibilities, according to the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan news agency.
