KABUL would be the main topic during its chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council in March.
The Russian foreign ministry underlined the need for peace in Afghanistan hours before the 15-member council began an open meeting on the situation in this country.
“Afghanistan is entering an extremely important phase of its development, demanding new efforts of the Afghans as well as consolidated support of the international community with the central coordinating role of the UN,” the ministry said.
In a statement, it referred to presidential and provincial elections, the end of the NATO-led international troops’ withdrawal, transition of the security responsibility to Afghan forces.
“All this dictates the need for greater attention of the international community and the UN to Afghan problems. Terrorist activities continue spreading from northern provinces of Afghanistan to adjacent countries of Central Asia,” it added.
The spread of terror also posed a threat to Russian national security, the ministry said, calling the flow of drugs from Afghanistan menace to the Central Asian region, Russia and international peace and security.
