KABUL on Wednesday outclassed Kenya by eight wickets in the first of the two one-day matches in the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cricket League (WCL) in Sharjah, an official said.
Kenya, which won the toss and chose to bat in the 50 overs game, set a paltry target of 90 runs for Afghanistan, thanks to fast bowler Hamid Hassan’s four-wicket haul, said Farid Hotak, the Afghanistan Cricket Board spokesman.
Hotak told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone from the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium that the Kenyans were bundled out in the 38th over.
Hassan was the pick of Afghan bowlers as he sent four opposition batsmen back to the pavilion. Credit for the low target also went to Shahpur Zadran and Samiullah Shinwari as both shared two wickets each, said Hotak, who added Hamza Hotak and Rahmat Shah also took one wicket apiece.
Afghanistan chased the target in the 18 th over, with Nawroz Mangal hitting a breezy half century that involved four sixes. He was followed by Shahzad Mohammadi, who smashed a superb 33. Hassan was declared the man of the match.
A clean sweep of the series can earn the Afghans, who crushed Kenya in a Twenty-20 encounter on Monday night, direct qualification for the showpiece in Australia and New Zealand.
Based at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium due to the bad security situation in their home country, Afghanistan have to pick up two points each from both matches to finish ahead of the UAE in second position.
