ISLAMABAD (PAN‘s port city of Karachi on Thursday, hours after the metropolitan was rattled by a series of explosions, officials said.
The outlawed Lashkar-i-Jhangvi (LeJ) fighters were killed during an exchange of fire with the Crime Investigation Department (CID) personnel in the Mauripur area, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Chaudhry Aslam said.
Police launched a search operation near Lucky Pahari area on receiving a tip-off regarding the suspects’ presence. On policemen’s arrival, the insurgents opened fire, sparking the gunbattle, the SSP told journalists.
“Six terrorists, including two would-be suicide bombers, were killed during the firefight. Police also suffered minor injuries,” he said, adding: “We have also recovered suicide vests and a car-load of explosives.”
On Wednesday night, three bomb and grenade attacks near Shiite mosques left about 20 people injured. The attacks on the eve of Ashura processions caused fears among residents. The injured included policemen, Rangers personnel and media representatives.
