CHARIKAR): Police on Friday thwarted a smuggling attempt by detaining two people with 200 kilograms of opium in central Kapisa province, a local official said.
Counternarcotics police chief, Col. Abdul Wahid Hashmi, told Pajhwok Afghan News the pair was held in the Sang Barid area on the outskirts Mahmood Raqi, the provincial capital.
The drugs, he said, had been concealed in hidden parts of a car. The detainees hailed from the Tagab district of the province. The drugs were being smuggled to Kabul, he said, noting that the men were being interrogated.
Earlier, the counternarcotics police had said opium poppies had been cultivated in parts of the province and that security forces were unable to prevent farmers from growing the illicit crop.
