TALOQAN (PAN): Residents of this capital city of northeastern Takhar province have gained access to electricity imported from Tajikistan via neighbouring Kunduz province, an official said on Saturday.
The 64-kilometre electricity lines, an Asian Development Bank-funded project, cost $27 million, the provincial electricity department head, Mohammad Khan Mohmand, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
An Indian company had been involved in the project that benefited as many as 5,200 families living in 12 square kilometre area, he said, adding electricity would also be extended to Hazar Somach, Baharak and Farkhan districts next year.
He said Taluqan residents were started supplying the 24 hours electricity yesterday evening, spreading a wave of joy among them.
Residents said their years-long wait finally came to an end with the supply of permanent electricity.
Resident Rahmatullah said locals would take advantage of the imported electricity in various spheres of life on a daily basis.
Ahmad Rashid, another resident, said no electricity had been a result of backwardness in areas of education and technology.
The Asian Development Bank has earlier announced extending imported electricity from Tajikistan via Kunduz to Taluqan through a 157-kilometer electricity line.
