KABUL, Irrigation and Livestock said on Saturday it was constructing five slaughter houses and 700 cold storage facilities for storing onions in various parts of the country.
Agriculture Minister Mohammad Asif Rahimi while presiding over a meeting on the agriculture plan 2013- 2016, said 700 cold storage facilities would be built in regions producing more onions.
Each facility would have the capacity of storing 20 to 500 tons of onions, he said, without giving further details.
Five slaughter houses would also be built in order to professionally process animal meats, he promised.
An agreement to establish 6,000 poultry farms had also been signed and work on the farms would be launched soon, Rahimi said.
On agriculture development, he said wheat producttion was on the increase every year, while rice, almond, grapes and cotton productions had doubled this year.
Currently 1,300 cold storages for potatoes have been built in Badakhshan and Bamyan provinces, he said, adding there were no investments in medical plants, but his ministry used more than $2 million every year on saffron cultivation.
Mutassil Kumaki, the deputy minister of commerce and industry, said 80 percent Afghans were associated with agriculture.
He underlined the importance for more investment in agriculture sector to improve the country’s economy.
