New US commander supports April polls

KABUL) Joint Command, on Saturday pledged support for the April 5 presidential and provincial elections.

Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson, who replaced his fellow American Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, said: “The immediacy is supporting the elections and earlier fighting season and getting through all that.”

Speaking at a command transfer ceremony in Kabul, Anderson said that the ongoing impasse over the Bilateral Security Agreement between Afghanistan and the US afforded him a pause.

Milley acknowledged the progress made by Afghan security forces over the past decade, recalling the devastating 9-11 attack on American history.

Terrorists trained in Afghanistan killed 3,000 Americans, an assault that prompted the invasion of the country in late 2001, he added.

Anderson, the commander of Fort Bragg and the 18th Airborne Corps, joined about 500 of his soldiers.
