GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): The Ghazni governor on Thursday called for Taliban to cease violence during next week’s programmes marking the southern province as the centre of Islamic the civilisation.
Musa Khan Akbarzada, addressing a meeting in Ghazni City, said the ongoing fighting in Afghanistan benefitted foreigners — not the Taliban. He urged the fighters to realise the stark reality.
He asked the insurgents to view the celebration, set for Feb. 23, as a matter of pride for them, shun violence on that day and let residents participate in the event.
No one would be allowed to fuel unrest on that day, pledged the governor. Those who shed the blood of innocent people were not Muslims, he added.
Provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Zarawar Zahid, said stringent measures had been put in place to ensure the event was held in a peaceful atmosphere.
Ghazni City, the provincial capital, was selected as capital of the Islamic civilisation by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) at a conference in Tripoli in 2007.
