KABUL Bank (DAB) on Wednesday announced the printing of a new 1,000 afghani new note, with some changes to curb the circulation of fake currency.
DAB Governor Noorullah Dilawari acknowledged at a news conference that the 2003 banknotes of 1,000 and 500 denominations had been faked. The counterfeit currency is in circulation.
The fresh bill, having six new specifications, could not be forged, Dilawari claimed, explaining the 1,000 figure had been written clearly on the watermark. It also bears DAB’s insignia.
He said signatures of the central bank’s governor and the minister of finance on the new bill had also been changed. The new notes will be released soon to the market and the old ones gradually withdrawn.
