FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): At least 14 Taliban militants, including two foreigners, were killed and a dozen others wounded after they stormed a security forces base in northeastern Badakhshan province, an official said on Saturday.
The governor’s spokesman Ahmad Naveed Farotan told Pajhwok Afghan News the gunbattle broke out after insurgents attacked the base from three directions in Ragak and Pul-i-Soch localities of Jurm district.
Security forces on the base remained unhurt during the firefight that lasted about eight hours, he said.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the fighting was still ongoing but he had no details about casualties.
The residents of Ragak confirmed the clashes between security forces and rebels were still ongoing. A local Habibullah said both the sides should stop fighting in respect to the holy month of Ramadan.
