2 dead in Helmand violence

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A civilian and a policeman have been killed in separate security incidents in southern Helmand province, an official said Thursday.

Helmand police spokesman, Maj. Fareed Ahmad Obaid, told Pajhwok Afghan News that a suicide bomber planning to target a police compound came under fire by police in Nawzad district late Wednesday evening.

The policeman identified the attacker before he could reach his intended target, he said.

Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and said that a large number of police personnel suffered casualties in the incident.

Obaid added that a border police officer and civilian were killed in another incident in Lashkargah.

But an official wishing not to be named said the dead officer was working with the National Directorate of Security (NDS).
