KABUL (Pajhwok): Ministry of Interior (MoI) officials on Wednesday set alight narcotics weighing three tonnes in central Parwan province.
The drugs torched included heroin, hashish, opium and alcohol, said Abdul Khalil Bakhtiar, director general of the counternarcotics department at the MoI.
He said so far around 200 tonnes of drugs had been torched throughout the country this solar year that ends on March 21 and 2,030 detainees referred to judicial organs.
Par wan is home to at least 10,000 individuals addicted to drugs and their number is said to be on the rise at an alarming rate.
Some provincial officials and local residents cite easy access to drugs as the main reason behind the increasing number of addicts.
As many as 1.6 million people are addicted to drugs in Afghanistan, which ranks first in poppy cultivation and opium production.
