SHARAN/LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): At least 28 rebels, including a dreaded commander of the Haqqani group, have been killed in southern Helmand and southeastern Paktika provinces, officials said on Wednesday.
Nabiullah Pirkhail, spokesman for the Paktika governor, told Pajhwok Afghan News Haqqani network Sultan was killed along with five other militants in a US drone attack in Barmal district.
Shair Ahmad, a resident of the district, said: “The US drone strike killed a group of militants last night and their bodies were badly mutilated and could not be recognised.” There has been no reaction from the group so far.
Meanwhile, the 215th Maiwand Military Corps in Helmand said at least 15 militants had been killed in a search operation in the area and their dead bodies were still lying in the area.
Separately, six fighters were killed in Nad Ali and two others during a military operation in Marja districts, he said, adding civilians and security forces remained unhurt.
Taliban claimed that two tanks of security forces have been destroyed in the clash in Nauzad district. In an email, the movement said three civilians, including an old man, were killed and six others wounded.
