ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Hundreds of residents on Friday rallied in southwestern Nimroz province, urging the unity government to mention the word “Afghan” in electronic ID cards.
The protesters numbered around 300 and were chanting slogans “We are Afghans”.
Mohammad Sediq Chekhansori, the Provincial Council head, and one of the rally participants, told Pajhwok Afghan News they wanted unity among the people.
He said the enemies of the Afghan people did not wish unity among the Afghans. “Our enemies want to create differences among us, but we’ll never allow them to reach their goals.”
Abdul Hamid, another protester, said: “In the electronic ID cards, words Afghan and Islam should be mentioned because we are both Afghans and Muslims.”
Haji Barakat said: “If the word Afghan is omitted, we will continue our protests.”
The rally began from the Grand Mosque Square and culminated at Shuada Square in Zaranj city after the protesters issued a statement.
The statement said efforts were ongoing to prevent Afghans from becoming one nation.
“Efforts are in place to prevent Afghans from becoming one nation and divide us on ethnic and religious lines, something they have always exploited.
In a veiled reference to Iran and Pakistan as its fifth province.”
