Kunduz City to be cleared of enemy soon: Atmar

KABUL militants soon.

Atmar was talking to European Union Special Representative in Afghanistan Franz-Michael Skjold Mellbin at the former’s office, a statement from Atmar’s office said.

The meeting discussed relations between Afghanistan and the European Union (EU), recent insecurity incidents in Afghanistan and the capability of Afghan security forces and their coordination, the statement added.

Atmar said the enemy was trying to use defenseless residents of Kunduz as human shields to prolong the war. He said it remained the most important for Afghan security forces to protect the lives of local residents and that the city would be completely cleared from the enemy soon.

The national security advisor said the president had ordered evaluation of the capacity of security forces and their deployments in order to better use their capacity and increase coordination among them.

The EU special representative praised the gains the Afghan security forces had achieved against the insurgents, saying the union would continue assist Afghan security forces in areas of training, advising and equipping.

The Taliban captured Kunduz city a week back, but most parts were retaken from them after the Afghan forces launched a counterattack, with sporadic clashes still ongoing in some parts of the city.
