5,635 militants, 2,146 police killed in 6 months

KABUL (Pajhwok): As many as 5,635 Taliban militants and 2,146 Afghan policemen have been killed as a result of different security incidents in various parts of the country during the first six months of this solar year which begins on March 22, the Ministry of Interior (MOI) said on Thursday.

“ In the first six months of 1394 solar year,  5635 militants have been killed, 3,102 others injured and 539 more detained in total 2637 military operations,”  MOI spokesman Sediq Sediqi told a press conference presenting the ministry’s six-month report.

He said police’s combat activities increased by 70 percent during the past six months compared to the same period last year. He said 10 suicide attackers with explosive vests had been arrested during the period.

Nearly 12,000 people have been detained on charges of different crimes and introduced to judiciary departments, he said.

According to Sediqi, operations by special police have been reduced by five percent and joint operations with international forces by 55 percent during the past six months.

The period saw 2826 firing, 1771 attacks, 1304 blasts, 712 ambushes, 41 suicide attacks, 13 group attacks, 104 terror incidents and 1021 rock attacks taking place.

Police seized 251 light weapons, seven heavy weapons, 70 landmines, more than 8,000 shells and bullets, four walkie-talkies, 54 vehicles and a large amount of ammunition during the half year.

A total of 1517 national police and 629 local policemen and 991 civilians died and 2574 national police, 748 local police and 2569 civilians were wounded, he said.

Out of the total 9538 criminal incidents,  8431 were detected and 12334 people arrested in connection with the crimes, he said, adding 2461 criminals remained at large and 1107 incidents being investigated. Most of the criminal cases took place in Kabul and the least in Nuristan province, he said.

During the period, 43835 tonnes of drugs including opium, hashish and alcoholic beverages were seized, he said, adding the ministry had collected 30,000 intelligence reports on the basis of which 5454 policemen were investigated.

As a result of the investigations, he said, 13 policemen were removed from jobs and introduced another 38 policemen to prosecutor’s offices.
