LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Twenty-two border police personnel and 35 militants have been killed during a clash in the Nawzad district of southern Helmand province, a security official said on Wednesday.
The policemen’s corpses were sent to Lashkargah, the provincial capital, after Tuesday’s firefight in the Kurma Karez area of the district, the official told Pajhwok Afghan News on condition of anonymity.
At least nine border policemen from the fourth and fifth battalions were wounded and seven more had been missing since the deadly encounter, he said, adding the Taliban’s bodies were still lying at the site.
Omar Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, confirmed the fighting and casualties in Nawzad. “A delegation has been sent to the area to ascertain casualties and gather details about the incident,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Taliban also verified the firefight in Nawzad, which was overran by militants two months ago.
According to another report, one traffic police official was shot dead and another wounded by unidentified gunmen in the Greshk district of Helmand.
The district’s administrative chief, Mohammad Fahim Mosazai, said the gunmen opened fire on the traffic police in the Nawzad Ada area of district this morning.
Provincial traffic department head, Mirza Khan Rohani, confirmed the shooting. He said a search had been launched for the killers.
