27 university students detained in Nangarhar raid

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Twenty-seven university students have been arrested for carrying Taliban and Daesh flags during a protest rally in eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Tuesday said.

Some days ago, a number of Nangarhar University students, carrying flags of Islamic State (IS) and Taliban, staged a protest in Jalalabad City, the provincial capital, against hostel accommodation problems.

The governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News a raid by Afghan forces on Nangarhar University hostel on Monday night.

He said the operation was ordered by the governor but stopped short of going into details.

The university chancellor, Babrak Miakhail, confirmed the operation and said 27 students had been arrested for investigation.

Earlier, Miakhail had asked security organs to act against students who protested against the government. He had said that police did not take stern action against those supporting militants during the rally.

He said the protest could not represent all students of the university as 99 percent of students opposed it.

The protest was also condemned by people, civil society activists and parliament and they asked the government to take stern action against the rally organisers.
