JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Tribal elders from the Shinwari district of eastern Nangarhar province have demanded the government to step up air strikes against Islamic State (IS) insurgents in the area.
During a meeting with Govenror Salim Khan Kunduzi lat on Friday, the elders stressed the need over continuity in the airstrikes and provide more assistance to displaced persons.
Haji Ghalib, the Achin district chief and tribal elder said tribal elders and district chiefs asked governor to expand the range of strike and discussed issued related to good governance with governor.
Kunduzi told the elders and provincial government was trying to improves education and other facilities in the district and provide more assistance to affected people.
On Friday, Fourteen Islamic State or Daesh militants were killed and a dozen more wounded in latest airstrikes by the Afghan Air Force (AAF) in Nangarhar, the Ministry of Defence said.
A statement from the ministry said the airstrikes were carried out during the last 24 hours in the Achin district.
It claimed a large number of weapons belonging to Daesh fighters were also destroyed as a result of the airstrikes.
The group suffered heavy casualties this year after being consistently targeted by Afghan security forces in Nangarhar province.
MoD also claimed 35 militants have been killed and several others injured during joint operations by Afghan forces in Nangarhar, Ghazni and Maidan Wardak provinces.
A MoD statement received by Pajhwok Afghan News said the operations conducted over the past 24 hours involved personnel from the Afghan National Army (ANA) and other security forces.
The raids resulted in the killing of at least 35 militants and injuries to as many others and 10 more were detained, the statement said.
The operations were launched in Achin district of Nangarhar, Deh Yak and Ab-Band districts of Ghazni and Chak district of Maidan Wardak provinces.
