Passengers in trouble as Hajigak Pass closed by snowfall

BAMYAN CITY (Pajhwok):  The Hajigak Pass, connecting central Bamyan province with capital Kabul through Maidan Wardak province, has been closed since Wednesday due to heavy snowfall, officials said on Thursday.

Driver Mohammad Jan said that most passengers travelled through the Hajigak Pass instead of Ghorband Valley in Parwan. But now many of people have to travel to the nation’s capital through Ghorband.

Meanwhile, Director of Public Works Eng. Mohammad Anwari promised reopening the strategic road as soon as possible. He said all roads to districts and other provinces were open, but three valleys remained blocked.

The road has been closed by snowfall in the Behsud district of Maidan Wardak. Provincial officials should take urgent steps for reopening the route, said the Bamyan governor’s spokesman, Abdul Rahman Ahmadi.

Although the Bamyan-Kabul highway passing through Parwan province is open, people avoid travelling the road due to insecurity. Kidnappings on the road in Syagard district have become a routine occurrence.

A resident of Bamyan said a one-way air ticket to Kabul cost 5,500afs. There are only two flights a week to Baman which cannot resolve the transportation problem of even 40 percent of people travelling to Kabul.
