Balkh PC member seeks asylum in Germany

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A female provincial council member in northern Balkh province has sought political asylum in Germany, the council chief said on Saturday.

Afzal Hadid told Pajhwok Afghan News the council member, Sawgand Frangis, had obtained a three-month leave four months ago for medical treatment abroad.

He said her office leave had expired 11 days ago but she was yet to return her duty. Hadid said Frangis traveled to Germany and sought political asylum there.

He added the provincial council would decide on cancelling the membership of Frangis in their next meeting.

However, deputy provincial council head, Shujauddin Shuja, denied the claim and said Frangis had traveled to Germany for personal work and would return to office.

Frangis had also worked as reporter with Bayan Radio Station of ISAF in the northern region.

She also survived a militant attack before being elected to the provincial council.

An official of Bayan Radio Station also confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News that Frangis had sought refuge in Germany.
