Before being killed, Taliban supremo met Russians in Iran

KABUL’s Baluchistan province, a reliable source close to the militant movement said on Monday.

For the first time ever, the US State Department stated the Taliban leader might have been killed in a drone strike in a remote area near the Afghan-Pakistan border.

On Sunday, the Afghan spy service — National Directorate of Security (NDS) –confirmed Mansourwas killed in a US drone strike inBalochistan province. A statement from the agency said Mansour’s vehicle was struck on the main road in Dalbandin area at 3:45pm on Saturday.

Mansour had been under close surveillance for a while until his vehicle was targeted and destroyed, the statement said.An individual close to the Taliban told Pajhwok Afghan News Mansour visited Iran to hold talks with a Russian delegation.

Earlier, Russian special envoy Zamir Kabulov had acknowledged that Moscow had links with the Taliban and provided the group with assistance.

Sources within the Ashraf Ghani administration revealed the US and Afghanistan had coordinated the attack on the Taliban leader deep inside Pakistan.Mansour’s killing in Pakistan strengthened Kabul’s claim that Taliban leaders lived and plotted attacks in that country.
