Achin elders impose fine on Daesh sympathizers

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Tribal elders in the Achin district of eastern Nangarhar province have imposed a five million afghanis fine on individuals sympathetic to the Islamic State (IS), an official said on Wednesday.

Attaullah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the elders informed Governor Salim Khan Kunduzi about their decision during a meeting in Jalalaabad, the provincial capital.

Residents of Achin district had decided to fine an individual five million afghanis if he supported, provided shelter and helped the IS rebels, said elders Usman and Kamin.

They urged the government equip local police forces and provide them with necessary arms and equipment.

Kamin said elders in the war-torn district had decided not to dispute over minor issues and would remain committed to their promises made with the government against the insurgent elements.

He said the elders had formed a new council which would look into issues of the district and would work in coordination with the government.

Governor Kunduzi told the visiting elders they should remain united and follow a leader who could address their issues quickly.

He said the Presidential Palace had pledged continued operations against insurgents in Achin until the last terrorist was eliminated there.
