Afghan sectarian harmony an example for region: Ghani

KABUL — an example of co-existence at the regional level.

“The 10th of Muharram (Ashura) had been day of worship for Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). The importance of this day has increased as it coincides with the martyrdom of Hazrat Hussain and his companions,” the president told a gathering.

He strongly condemned last night’s attack and the terrorists behind it as the killers and enemies of humanity.He said the followers of different sects lived in a peaceful environment in Afghanistan and it was exemplary for the rest of the region.

The president said the terrorist wanted to disturbsectarian co-existence and targeted holy places and worshipers.He said the government his following the political role model set by Imam Hussain.

He said his administration remained committed to eliminating corruption, introducing reforms, ensuring social justice, balancing development and bringing transparency to all governance affairs.

Ghani urged religious scholars from Sunni and Shiite sects to play their role in cementing national unity and preventing certain elements from harmingsectarian harmony.

Sixteen Shiite mourners were killed and another 54 wounded in the attack on the Cart-i-Sakhi shrine in the 3rd police district, the Interior Ministry spokesman said.

Sediq Sediqqi told Pajhwok Afghan News all the assailants were killed. He did not put any figure on the number of attackers, but a well-placed security source said four gunmen fired at the mourners.
