Shiite youth donate blood, eschew self-flagellation

SHIBERGHAN CITY (Pajhwok): Dozens of Shiite youth donated blood instead of beating themselves with chains, establishing a new blood bank named ‘Imam Hussain’ on Wednesday in the capital of northern Jawzjan province, an official said.

Dr. Faridoon Habib, the public health director, said more than a hundred youth registered their names with the public health department and set up a blood donation centre called ‘Imam Hussain’ and avoided self-flagellation on Youm-i-Ashur.

The blood donation was launched by some youth on Tuesday night in three holy places of Shiberghan, the provincial capital, and dozens of people have donated blood to the bank so far, he added.

“They donate their blood for our soldiers, who have been wounded defending the country and are in severe need of blood, and the public health department blood storage capacity has also increased to 400 packets of blood against the earlier 100 packs.”

The blood would be used in needed circumstances and if required would also be transferred to other provinces for needed people.

Abdul Malik Rustami, a resident of Shiberghan who took part in the blood donation drive, said: “This time we decided to remember the sacrifice of Imam Hussain in a different way: Avoiding self-flagellation which is also an un-Islamic practice; we want to promote the blood donation culture in our society.”
