60 prisoners released from Kandahar jail

KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): Sixteen prisoners have been released from the central jail in southern Kandahar province in compliance with a presidential decree issued on the occasion of Eid Miladun Nabi.

The provincial appellate attorney, Abdul Rahman Koshan, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the released inmates had been convicted for various crimes. They included one woman and three children.

Koshan said another 87 prisoners got their jail terms reduced in the presidential decree.

Kandahar jail in-charge Col. Abdul Wali Hesarak said the central jail housed 1915 inmates, including 27 women.

He said the jail had been constructed long ago and inmates faced space problem. But every effort was being made to facilitate the prisoners, Hesarak said.

One of the freed inmates, Dad Mohammad, who spent about one year in the jail, said he was thankful to the president.

He said the time he spent in the jail was his life’s toughest. He said he wanted to live in the society as a man of good character and would never commit crime again.
