Highway closed after attacks on security posts

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): The highway linking Pul-i-Khumri and Mazar-i-Sharif was blocked for traffic following Taliban attack on security posts in northern Baghlan province on Wednesday, officials and residents said.

Mir Zaman, an inhabitant of Baghlan, told Pajhwok Afghan News the insurgents stormed security posts on the busy highway in Chashma Shir area on the outskirts of the provincial capital.

He said the highway had been closed for traffic as clashes between security forces and Taliban were still ongoing. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road, Zaman added.

Baghlan traffic chief Cap. Abdur Razzaq confirmed the highway blockade, saying vehicles were stranded in different areas. The cars have been parked away from the road to prevent more traffic problems.

However, provincial police spokesman Zabihullah Shuja said the Taliban attacks had been pushed back and the highway reopened for traffic.

The Pajhwok reporter, who visited the area at 8am, said that the route was blocked, leaving a large number of vehicles stranded.
