11-member rebel group renounce insurgency in Bamyan

KABUL commander by the name of Qari Wakil has joined the peace process along with his 10 fighters in central Bamyan province, an official said on Saturday.

Qari Wakil was behind the northern Baghlan’s Tala-wa-Barfak district collapse earlier this year.

Bamyan Governor Mohammad Tahir Zaheer expressed happiness over the 11-member group’s joining of peace, saying some neighboring countries were out to insecure and destroy Afghanistan for their own interests.

Afghan people must be united against enemies, he said, claiming all suicide attackers were sent by the neighboring countries to Afghanistan. “Now Taliban should realize the overt fact and join the reconciliation process.”

Bamyan Peace Committee head, Mohammad Sadiq Aliyar, while welcoming the reconciled insurgent group said peace was of benefit to everyone.

He said the reconciled insurgents turned in all their weapons.

The rebel commander Qari Wakil also spoke on the occasion, saying: “When we took control of Tala-wa-Barfak district from government, we were ordered to destroy all government buildings. It was when realized that doing so wasn’t in the interest of our country. Finally, we decided to join peace process.”

At the beginning of this year, Tala-wa-Barfak district fell to Taliban hands; however, it was later was recaptured by security forces.
