15 killed, 28 injured in Baghlan bus accident

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): At least 15 people were killed and 28 others wounded in a traffic accident in the Doshi district of northern Baghlan province on Sunday, an official said.

Traffic Director 2nd Lt. Sohrab told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident took place in the morning when a passenger bus heading from Kabul to Mazar-I-Sharif overturned in Kilagi area of the district.

Provincial deputy public health director, Abdul Halim Ghafari, confirmed receiving 15 dead and 28 injured form the accident area.

He said three women and three children were among the dead and health condition of 10 of the injured was critical.

Provincial police chief, Ikramuddin Saray, talking to reporters said that the accident took place due to the driver’s recklessness. He said the driver was managed to escape after the accident.

“Traffic police would be directed to seriously follow such incidents and those violate traffic rules would be arrested and their vehicles confiscated,” he said.

Ghulam Ali, who lost son in the accident, said that the driver was not in normal condition during driving. He asked the government to prevent such individuals from driving and stop people losing their lives to accidents every day.

On the other hand, a statement from the Presidential Palace received by Pajhwok, said President Ashraf Ghani was affected by the loss and injury of a number of people in the incident.

The president asked transportation companies and drivers to observe all traffic rules for the safety of passengers and ordered Baghlan officials to take needed measures for the treatment of injured and assisting the affected families.
