Solar refrigerators distributed to nomad entrepreneurs

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) on Saturday distributed solar-powered refrigerators and other tools to 150 nomad dairy entrepreneurs.

Talking at a press conference here, Rural Rehabilitation and Development Minister Nasir Ahmad Durrani said the refrigerators were distributed to nomad entrepreneurs under the Rural Enterprise Development Program (REDP) of the ministry in Nangarhar, Herat, Balkh and Parwan provinces.

He said the aid would directly help 150 entrepreneurs and create jobs indirectly for more than 1,800 people. The aid package would boost working skills of nomad businessmen and better save their products.

“The new facility will enable our nomad livestock owners to offer quality milk, yogurt, cheese, butter and other dairy products to the market,” he said.

One of the entrepreneurs, Mohammad Hassan, who received a solar powered refrigerator, told Pajhwok Afghan News their dairy products decayed due to absence of a proper place for their safety.

He was no longer worried about safety of his dairies after receiving the solar powered refrigerator and thanked the MRRD.  “Nomads were not paid even little attention in the past, we were disappointed, but now a hope has risen.”

MRRD launched REDP in 2010 and it is currently active in 794 villages in Parwan, Balkh, Herat, Bamyan and Nangarhar provinces.
