Nearly 800kg of drugs seized in Logar

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Intelligence operatives have seized nearly 800 kilograms of opium in Charkh district of central Logar province, an official said on Monday.

Governor’s spokesman, Mir Ahmad Silab, told Pajhwok Afghan News National Directorate of Security (NDS) personnel seized the drugs during an operation in the district on Sunday night.

He said 790 kilograms of the drugs were captured from a pick up vehicle, but no one was detained in connection with the drugs.

The driver had managed to escape. Silab said the drugs were destined for southern provinces from the east.

Haseebullah Stanikzai, a provincial council member, said Logar recently became notorious for drugs transit.

Thousands kilograms of drugs are trafficked from eastern Laghman, Nangarhar and Kunar provinces to other provinces through Logar annually, he said.

“People do not grow drugs in Logar but its transport through this province is increasing the population of addicts,” he said.

Logar officials said around 2,800 kilograms of drugs have been seized in the province since the beginning of the current solar year.
