Killed by husband, woman’s body found after 8 days

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): A man in the Nahrin district of northern Baghlan province has murdered his pregnant wife, an official said on Thursday.

District chief Fazal Din Muradi told Pajhwok Afghan News the woman pregnant with twins was mercilessly killed by her husband in a remote area.

He said the incident happened eight days ago but the victim’s body was discovered on Wednesday evening by police with the help of local people.

Muradi added the woman referred to the district centre 10 days back to complain against the violence she was facing at the hands of in-laws. Along with her husband, she was referred to the district attorney office.

But the attorney, without obtaining any guarantee, handed the woman over to her spouse. The pregnant woman was then murdered by her husband who managed to flee the area.

But Mohammad Arif, head of the appellant court, claimed the husband of the woman was handed over to police before he killed his wife. In fact, he explained, police let him go.

On the other hand, the district police chief, Mohammad Hussain, insisted they had referred the accused to the attorney office for investigations but they allowed him to go scot-free.

Sara Ahmadi, a Baghlan University student, held government responsible for the killing of the pregnant woman. She said if the woman had been handed over to her husband under the law, she could have been rescued.

Sara alleged it was not the first time that such an incident had taken place. She said several women handed over to their families unconditionally were later killed.
