KABUL members on Saturday demanded investigation into corruption allegations against the lower house speaker and secretary.
Earlier, Humayon Humayon, first deputy speaker, had accused the Wolesi Jirga secretariat of embezzlement and illegal appointment of hundreds.
The allegations included spending five million afghanis on rent for the house and office of the Wolesi Jirga speaker and illegal appointments of a number of individuals.
The debate on corruption charges against Ibrahim comes at a time when the speaker is abroad.
Lawmaker Dr. Ramazan Bashardost told the lower house: “Documents regarding alleged corruption by the speaker have been revealed and the Attorney Office can do nothing in this regard.”
He suggested Ibrahimi should be suspended in line with the Article 101 of the Constitution over alleged corruption, which was considered a national treason.
Bashardost termed allegations of corruption against Ibrahimi “a shame” for the lower house and said if the house did not start accountability from within, it would not be able to held accountable the president and the chief justice.
Mohammad Sarwar Usman Farahi, another lawmaker, said: “Corruption charges against Ibrahimi bring a bad name to the Wolesi Jirga.”
He said lawmakers should give priority to accountability not compromises. Ibrahimi should be suspended and introduced to the attorney office, he demanded.
Abdul Rahim Ayubi, a lawmaker from Kandahar province, said it would be better for Ibrahimi to commit suicide. Lawmakers could not criticise the government for corruption when their chairman was accused of the same, he remarked.
Deputy speaker Humayon Humayon tasked the investigation and finance commissions of the house to investigate the issue and present the result of their investigation to the house.
He told the permanent commissions of the lower house to help investigate all related documents of the alleged corruption by the Wolesi Jirga speaker and the secretary.
Wolesi Jirga secretary Khudai Nazar Nasrat was present at the house, but he did not speak.
