Meshrano Jirga investigating Momand’s complaint

KABUL (Pajhwok): Senate chairman Fazl Hadi Muslimyar on Sunday tasked the house commission against impunity with investigating a complaint lodged by a provincial council member from northern Balkh province, Mohammad Asif Momand.

On August 7, Momand accused Balkh Governor Atta Mohammad Noor of corruption and claimed Noor had threatened him with death.

Momand was arrested after he had landed at the airport in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh, following an exchange of fire lasting four hours.

Balkh police chief Syed Kamal Sadaat had told the media that gunmen loyal to Governor Noor had detained Momand.

But the governor had said Momand was arrested based on a letter from security organs. However, the Attorney General Office (AGO) had denied issuing arrest warrants for Momand.

The AGO has been investigating the incident and in its initial investigation has revealed that Momand was held with orders of the Balkh governor.

Mohammad Rahim Hussainyar, a lawmaker from Ghazni province, said: “Momand’s complaint has officially reached the house and it is our responsibility to investigate his complaint because one-thirds of the Mesharano Jirga is composed of members from provincial councils.”

Mohammad Ajan Mangal, another lawmaker, was the same view and demanded formation of a committee to investigate Momand’s allegations.

Muslimyar said Momand’s complaint should be investigated as per the law. He tasked the Impunity Commission to investigate Momand-Noor conundrum.
