Noor’s ouster to strengthen militants: Ismail Khan

HEART CITY (Pajhwok): Senior Jamiat-i-Islami leader Mohammad Ismail Khan on Sunday warned the national unity government’s internal strife could unleash new crisis.

Reacting to the approval of Balkh Governor Atta Mohammad Noor’s resignation by the president, Ismail Khan warned the government against cornering jihadi leaders.

The former water and energy minister said the removal of Noor as the governor of northern Balkh province would further strengthen Daesh and Taliban in the northern parts of the country and pave the ground for widespread fraud in upcoming polls.

“I am sure the confrontation within the government and the challenges that exist would generate a huge catastrophe and crisis,” the former jihadi leader told reporters in Herat City, the capital of western Herat province.

He said Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah had failed to support the Jamiat within the government.

He added the party held 50 percent share in the National Unity Government (NUG) and demanded the authorities not to ignore their rights.

Noor on Saturday told reporters the Jaimat could decide about his resignation from the governorship.

Noor had dismissed the Presidential Palace announcement of his resignation and asked the government not to threaten him with foreign countries.

Addressing a gathering remembering a former Jamiat-i-Islami jihadi commander Zabihullah Shaheed in Mazar-i-Sharif, Noor said his resignation was conditional and their talks with the government had not reached a conclusion.

In his long speech, Noor strongly criticised President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah. “We have rendered sacrifices for the country, but now some people who had come from Europe want to oust us from the government and put us on trial.”
