Kabul police admit negligence in attack on scholars

KABUL (Pajhwok): Kabul police chief Mohammad Daud Amin on Tuesday acknowledged negligence had been committed in security arrangements for the grand cleric gathering in Kabul.

Amin told reporters here that despite strict security arrangements in place for the ulema conference, the suicide bomber disguised as a in scholar had been able penetrate and blow himself up near the Polytechnic University gate.

Seven people were killed and 20 others injured in the blast that happened soon after the clerics issued a fatwa against suicide bombings and called for peace talks to end the ongoing war.

According to the 5th district police chief Ghafoor Aziz, the attacker set off his explosives near the entrance to the high-security compound. The blast came as participants were preparing to leave the venue, he said.

The Taliban  have denied their involvement in the assault on meeting of top religious scholars in Kabul.

“There were some issues in checking but in fact negligence has been committed, a committee has been formed to investigate individuals who had committed negligence,” he said.

The police chief said in the past one and a half months, three people had been arrested over terrorist attacks in different districts of Kabul.

During the period, another 341 crime suspects had been arrested in connection with 294 criminal activities, he said.

In the past three months, 136 counter-narcotics operations were conducted and as a result 147 suspected smugglers were arrested and 14 kilograms of heroin, 286 kg of Shesha or ice, 18 kg of opium, 14 kg of hashish, 146 bottles of wine were confidcated.

Three vehicles, one motorcycle, four pistols, 80 mobiles, 54600 afghanis cash and $400 also were recovered during the raids.
