HPC welcomes Ghani’s ceasefire announcement

KABUL to enter direct talks with the Afghan government and get maximum advantage of the opportunity.

In a statement to Pajhwok Afghan News, the HPC said that being peace facilitator and mediatory body, it welcomed the government declaration of ceasefire.

Earlier in the day, President Ashraf Ghani through a video message announced unilateral ceasefire with the Taliban, seen as a trust-building measure.

The ceasefire would go into effect from the 27th of Ramadan, one of the holiest periods in Islam, until the fifth day of Eidul Fitr, the president wrote on his Facebook page.

“We also welcome the unprecedented fatwa that only the state can declare jihad, thereby rendering violent campaign by any group is anything but a holy war,” Ghani said.

The peace body asked the Taliban to get maximum advantage of the offer and acknowledge the wishes of people and enter direct talks with the government.

The HPC statement termed the president’s move as unprecedented step towards building a peaceful future and a welfare state.
