At the opening ceremony for the SCO summit in the Chinese city of Quingdao on Saturday, Xinhua quoted Xi Jingping as commending the unity shown by members of the organisation.

Led by China and Russia, the grouping includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia have observer status.

India and Pakistan are attending the SCO summit — whose main working day begins today (Sunday) — as members for the first time. They were granted membership last year.
