Noor backs truce, but wants its duration stretched

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Former Balkh governor and Jamiat-i-Islami.

Noor wrote on his Facebook page: “Although the period of the ceasefire between government and the Taliban is limited, it should be appreciated.”

He demanded the truce duration be stretched. A lot more had to be done for durable peace, building on the opportunity that the ceasefire had created, the strongman believed.

“Every step that stops a bullet being fired and saves human life is admirable,” remarked the former Balkh governor, who urged the Taliban to renounce violence and take part in the reconstruction of the country.

Civil society activist Ghulam Rassoul Malakzai told Pajhwok Afghan News political parties and jihadi leaders should put pressure on the Taliban to extend the ceasefire period.

Earlier, former spymaster Amarullah Saleh and other figures opposed the government’s ceasefire offer to the Taliban and slammed the move the handiwork of the fifth column within the government.

President Ghani says the truce with the Taliban will begin from the 27th of Ramadan and last till the fifth of Eidul Fitr.

Soon after the government decision, the Taliban also announced a ceasefire during the three-day Eid festival. But foreign forces are excluded from the truce.
