5 police killed as Taliban storm Paktika posts

SHARANA (Pajhwok): At least five policemen have been killed and as many others wounded during a clash with Taliban militants in Gayan district of southeastern Paktika province, officials said Tuesday.

A government official in Gayan district, who wished to go unnamed, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Taliban militants stormed Afghan forces security posts on Monday night, killing five police and wounding five others.

Police spokesman Shah Mahmod Aryan confirmed the attack in Gayan district last night when the rebels also staged attacks in Ziruk and Naki districts.

He rejected police had sustained casualties in the attacks, saying the Taliban were pushed back and one insurgent was killed.

The Taliban have not yet commented on the incidents.

However, the group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed on his twitter account that 16 Afghan soldiers joined them in Janikhel district of Paktika. Mujahid also mentioned the names of those he said joined the group.

But local officials rejected his claim as a Taliban propaganda.
