GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Women to renew their ceasefire and join the peace process.
Gathering at Women’s Network office in Gardez, the provincial capital, the women said the Taliban’s three-day ceasefire with the government was a hopeful sign that proved all people supported peace.
Zarghona Himmat, head of Women’s Network office, said that women and girls were main victims of the conflict in Afghanistan because they lost husbands, brothers, fathers and children.
She thanked the government for accepting the public demand of extending the ceasefire and voiced on the Taliban leaders and government officials to work hard for ensuring peace in the country.
“A person killed in the war is definitely a mother’s child, brother of a sister or husband of a woman, so women are directly affected in the conflict,” she said.
She urged the Taliban to respect their own sisters, wives and children and stop the war and resolve their problem through dialogue.
Samkani said women also wanted peace as men wanted and the conflict had deprived them of their basic rights.
She asked Paktia tribal elders and Islamic scholars to honestly work for bringing peace in the country and preventing bloodshed.
About women’s rights, she said: “We want rights for women which Islam recommends, we also voice on Paktia leaders who resolve problems through jirgas (councils) to honestly and instantly work for peace and talk with the Taliban and the government.”
A civil society activist, Jamila, said war was not solution to the Afghanistan and that the Taliban should achieve their goals through negotiations.
She said both the sides should reach a ceasefire and then talk their common issues without interference from foreign countries.
“I am sure the Taliban would reach their desired results by talking with the government and joining the truce,” she said, adding all Afghans were tired of the war and a ceasefire should be agreed by both sides before talking about peace.
In addition to Paktia, residents of many other provinces have been calling on the Taliban to renew ceasefire and reach a peace agreement with the government.
