Tagab police claim preventing land-grabbing

MEHMOOD RAQI (Pajhwok): Police say they have prevented dozens of acres of government land from being usurped in the Tagab district of central Kapisa province.

Tagab district police chief Mohammad Naeem Safi told Pajhwok Afghan News people had encroached upon government land in the district’s Tameer area because the land was commercial and expensive.

“But currently we have prevented dozens of acres of public land from being usurped by not allowing people who lack documents to build structures on the land.”

He said many tribal elders, former jihadi commanders and powerful individuals were involved in the land-grabbing.

Meanwhile, residents of the bazaar area of the district confirmed police had prevented the government land from being sold.

Khyber, who owns a shop in the area, said land grabbers used different tactics how to grab public land.

Tribal elder Shah Wali said no government land had been left unsold in the district. he accused the former mayor of selling the whole land.

Last year, the Tagab district mayor was arrested by security forces over unauthorized distribution of government land.
